1. Our Power, Privilege, and the Purse project is based on the essential questions about the American Dream and how real it is. There were many aspects of this project that helped us to build up to the finishing product which is a symposium in which we had many panels with different topics including women in the work force, Islamophobia, and the education system in America. The first step of this project was to pick a topic of interest that we felt like would be easy for us to connect with and write about and then we wrote position papers on these topics that were based off of a thesis such as "The American is not real for women because they are not treated as equals when it comes to the work force and positions of power." Another piece of work that we produced was financial plans based off of us going to college and at one point we even considered having kids and how that would change or effect the way we would have to deal with our finance. We went on to then create infographics that would match along with our position papers or any of the other topics that were available to us. There is one example of an infographic at the bottom of the page.
2. For the financial plan I basically went through and decided what job i wanted and how much salary how my starting salary that job would have and then we would take into account all of the expenses in college and that includes food transportation electricity any other necessities such as hair and make up and getting your nails done. Then for the info graphic basically we used information from our position paper and put it into this visual that would inform people of small facts and numbers We used math a lot for our financial plans because we had to do a lot of multiplying and calculating exponential growth when it came to our salary and \ paying our taxes and how much tax you would have to pay over a certain amount of time. Some challenges that I faced were where that I didn't know how to fill in the spaces for how much taxes I pay in a year how much federal tax I paid but in the end I just had to get help from my parents for that and they helped me to figure that out. Something that I enjoyed about this project was that it really opened my eyes to see what the real world means financially and how much you actually do have to consider money and you can't just throw everything around and you're going to really have to work for everything and systematically think out your financial plans and where you want to put money and where you want to spend money and where you want to invest it because it's going to be important to have that balance especially for when you're much older and actually working.
3. -I learned that it is a long and very detailed process to understand about budgeting and taxes and that it is very important to focus very hard when making these decisions.
-I learned that when you're compounding interest you're taking money from the previous years and taking it into consideration for the next year which is why it's exponential.
-When it comes to statistical concepts I learned a lot of new vocabulary and material such as one variable statistics like bar graphs and two variable statistics such as box plots. I was introduced to many new concepts like the box and whisper plot that showed the first second and third quartile as well as the minimum and maximum.
-I didn't find myself needing to use these concepts for the topic of Islamophobia but I'm sure they were heavily used to show statistics about varying topics like discrimination and death rates.
4. My role for this exhibition was to be a panelist and my job was basically to sit in front of the audience and talk about an issue that is a concern to us in the world at this time. My topic was is on Islamophobia and so our panel talked about discrimination towards Muslims and prejudice as well as unfair bias towards brown people in general and I think I grew in this role because I had to except a lot of opposing views and figure out how to argue facts instead of just arguing opinions and letting my emotions get the best of me. So I grew more in the sense of control and I think that also in the area of leadership and taking a stand for what I believe in and being a leader in the group.
