Flame Test Lab
Purpose: Observe the characteristic colors produced by certain metallic ions when vaporized in a flame. Identify unknown metallic ions by means of it's test.
Materials:
-1 watch glass
-1 glass dropper
-1 thin glass stir rod
-1 100 Ml beaker containing methanol
-11 known test solids
-2 unknown test solids
-1 box of matches
-1 paper towel
-lab notebook
-1 pencil
Safety:
-goggles
-lab apron
-gloves
-hair ties back
-wash hands after handling chemicals
Procedure:
-bags out of classroom
-put on all safety gear
-ask questions
-gather all glassware, matches, and paper towels
-set up station
-one person station host, one person runner
-runner acquire bottle of methanol
Control:
-10 drops of methanol
-light match and ignite methanol
-observe and record observations and data
