Our last project of this year was Foodtopia and it revolves around food and the science of food. In humanities, we started by going through pre-production to create a video about the vegetarian and meaty diets. In chemistry, we began by studying food molecules and the different macro and micro nutrients, and then completing labs in Chemistry where we broke down proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. For the art portion of the Foodtopia project, there were multiple components that we had to make which included three prototypes of what a finished product would like for every school, then we created interview questions after developing the skills to give those interviews, a pizza slice from a wheel of Foodtopia topics, and a tile with a fact or graphic of the topic that you chose. My group studied the different eating lifestyles such as vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores.
The first activity that we did was coming up with ideas and drawing for three ideas, one for the middle school, one for the middle, and one for the high school. Each idea had to incorporate foodtopia into in and should be able to educate the students who we were making them for. This idea was for the elementary school where the kids would be able to lift each small wooden door and be greeted with a fact about calories or food. We added planters on the side and gave it bright colors to represent small children and promote healthy living.
We asked 2nd graders various questions revolving around vegetarian and omnivorous diets. We used their answers as a base for the videos that we created afterwards.
This is the pizza slice from the wheel of Foodtopia topics that we created. We wanted to use a kid friendly subject so we decided to use dinosaurs in the context of herbivores and carnivores because we all agreed that that is how we remember our food groups as well.
This was the very first sheet of ideas that we created for the video we were going to make about vegetarians and omnivores.

Our idea for the middle school would incorporate fast food joints and tell the kids how much calorie intake they are receiving and why it can be harmful. Hopefully this would have an effect on how often, and from where kids would get their fast food.
Our idea for the high school would be a simple vending machine that would only provide information about the food that was inside of it. So, instead of getting a bag of chips, you'll get a handful of nutritional information on that bag of chips. We would also dedicate a shelf of the vending machine to the cost comparison of organic food and processed food.
More interview notes from the 2nd graders.
This is a picture of the tile that we created to use as a tile for the elementary school kids. This is before we painted on the graphic for our topic.
This is the image that we are going to put ton top of the tile to inform the elementary school kids about vegetarianism in the US.
